The Time of/for Memory? Rhetoric, Violence, and Temporalities

Sponsor: Rhetorical and Communication Theory Division
Sat, 11/10: 9:30 AM  – 10:45 AM
Salt Palace Convention Center
Room: 150F (Level 1)
This panel plays with the rhetorical contours of public memory’s temporalities and time/ings in relation to remembering and forgetting ongoing histories and legacies of violence. Although questions pertaining to how a public remembers/forgets historical atrocities are common within public memory scholarship, we shift the focus of these inquires by (1) interrogating the different temporal structures that rhetorically inform/complicate/obfuscate such memory work, (2) considering how and through what rhetorical means alternative temporalities can be articulated to unsettle these embedded temporal structures, and (3) questioning what the appropriate timing is for publicly remembering those lost in the wake of violence. Individually, panel participants engage diverse case studies across both national and transnational contexts. Together, we marshal a set of questions, theories, and case studies that call for taking seriously the time/ing and temporalities that structure public memory and how these frameworks enable and constrain how publics make meaning of violence.
